Triathlete, 56, follows strict regimen

Who: John Mozena, 56, Lake Oswego; 6 feet, 160 pounds.

Mozena is a podiatrist in private practice and a published writer. An Oregon native, he graduated from Central Catholic High School and the University of Oregon. He and his wife, Liz, have two daughters, ages 21 and 25. He coached his girls in every sport they played.

Workout: A triathlete, Mozena has six Ironman competitions under his belt as well as 13 half-Ironmans and more than 20 marathons. He competes all over the country and is trying to get to the world championships. His coach, Dave Caiverella, also is a doctor.

Mozena exercises at least 15 hours a week and at least 20 hours a week before a competition.

He keeps a log of all workouts. He swims for an hour three times a week. He bikes three times during the week for one to two hours; his weekend ride is three to six hours. He runs three times during the week for an hour, and his weekend run is two and a half to three hours. In addition, he fits in three weekly 20-minute sessions of stretching, crunches and other exercises. He sometimes gets a ride to work and bikes home, about 25 miles. He likes to do a short family hike on Sundays on the Portland waterfront or at a local park.

Inspiring: Mozena enjoys modeling a healthy lifestyle for his patients. He says he loves being in good shape. He was "a very heavy kid," weighing 190 pounds as a high school freshman. Then he took up track and cross country and has been running ever since.

Danger zone: About two weeks ago he was hit by a car while riding in a bike lane in Gresham. He came away with a broken nose, chipped tooth and a cut lip that needed stitches.

Nutrition: Mozena starts his day with a whole-grain cereal. His lunch is always the same: a grilled chicken sandwich from Burger King with mustard, no mayo, and a salad without dressing. His wife cooks dinner that always includes fruit and salad; he sometimes splurges on low-fat salad dressing. He eats mainly chicken and fish, very little red meat. He also likes a veggie salad with a scoop of tuna on top. His favorite dessert is a honey and oat bar. He takes a daily multivitamin and has a protein shake as a recovery drink after a big workout. He has no problem treating himself now and then, but in general he follows his coach's advice to push away from the table before he gets stuffed. "It's not so bad to be hungry sometimes."
