Bowie and Bono

January 29, 2016

BONO has revealed his late pal David Bowie had some harsh words to say about his Spider-Man musical that "hurt his feelings".

The U2 frontman and the music legend, who died earlier this month after a secret battle with cancer, were friends for several years.

But that didn't stop Bowie from speaking his mind when it came to Broadway show Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, which featured music written by Bono and The Edge.

The Space Oddity singer gave Bono a list of things he thought were wrong with it.

However, the 55-year-old said he took the criticism on the chin and used it to make the 2011 show better. Speaking about their relationship, Bono added: "We had a playful sort of banter - he would really go there in conversations and we would even occasionally hurt each other's feelings.

"He took his daughter to a matinee to see Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, and he sent me the reasons he didn't like it.

"And everything he said was really helpful, because it was in the early days of the show." Writing in Rolling Stone magazine, Bono paid a touching tribute to his late music buddy, saying he is "really not" a rock star compared to him.

He added: "The sky is a lot darker here without the Starman."

Although they knew each other for several years, Bono said he never stopped idolising the Heroes singer who passed away aged 69. He added: "I'd like to consider myself David's friend, but I'm more of a fan."

The Dubliner reminisced about the first time he ever saw the music veteran perform - on iconic series Top of the Pops in 1972 while he performed Starman.

He said: "He was so vivid. So luminous. So fluorescent. We had one of the first colour TVs on our street, and David Bowie was the reason to have a colour TV."

Bono went on to compare Bowie with Elvis Presley and also told how his eldest daughter Jordan is a huge fan.
