Ranjan Das, CEO and MD of SAP Indian subcontinent passed
away after suffering from heart attack in Mumbai. He was just 42, one of the
youngest CEOs.What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India sometimes
ago, many of us have heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra,
Mumbai. He was an active sportsperson, a fitness freak and a marathoner. He was
commonly running on Bandra's Carter Road. One day he came back to home from his
gym, collapsed with a massive heart attack and passed away.
It was a sudden realization for corporate India. However, it
was even more grievous for runners among us.Since Ranjan was a keen marathon
runner (he ran Chennai Marathon in February 09, simultaneously some of us were
running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), it comes to our minds that why an
extremely active, sports person gave in to heart attack just at 42.
Was it a result of stress?
Ranjan had stated that he faced a lot of stress, a common
element in most of our lives. It is usually thought by us that by being fit, one
can overcome the adverse effects of stress. The Real Reason, mentioned in a small
line in the reports, which was missed by everyone, was that Ranjan used to
sleep for 4-5 hours. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program.
Renowned cardiologist on the subject of 'Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep'
have extracted the major points below hoping to protect our lives.
Some Excerpts:
1. Short sleep duration ( <5 or 5-6 hours ) enlarges
danger for high Blood Pressure by 350% to 500% in contrast to those who sleep
longer than 6 hours per night.
2.Young people (25-49 years of age) are more likely to get
high BP due to shortage of sleep.
3. Those who sleep less than 5 hours a night are at 3-fold
more risk of heart attacks.
4. Full and fractional lack of sleep amplify the blood
concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), which is the
major indication of heart attacks.Even after sleeping adequately at later
stage, the levels stayed high.
5. Just one night of sleep loss increase toxic substances in
body like Interleukin-6 (IL! -6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and
C-reactive protein (cRP).They enlarge danger of many health problems such as
cancer, arthritis and heart disease.
6. Sleeping for <=5 hours per night results in 39% rise
in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night results in 18% rise in
heart disease.
Ideal Sleep:
To sum up, sleep involves two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement
), which assists in mental consolidation and non-REM, which assists in physical
repair and rebuilding. You exchange between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times
while sleeping during the night.
The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM during which
your pituitary gland discharges growth hormones that repair yourbody. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.
In order to keep ourselves mentally alert during the day,
the latter part of sleep is more imperative.Waking up with an alarmclock after 5-6 hours keeps you irritated throughout the day
which is due to lack of REM sleep. And sleeping for less than 5 hours keeps your body completely at mess which is due lack
of non-REM sleep. You are inactive all through the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is very low.
Ultimately, being long-distance runners, you need an extra
hour of sleep so that damage caused by running can be repaired.
Conclusion:
Ranjan Das did everything right except controlling the
stress. He used to eat proper food, take exercise (marathon),
maintained proper weight. But he missed getting proper and
sufficient sleep, minimum 7 hours.According to us, that resulted in
his death.
Getting insufficient sleep (<7 hours) is just like to
play with fire, even if there is no or low stress.Ranjan Das is not
alone to miss sleep
