Alison Delgado, who survived a life-threatening bike collision in October, will be the official starter of the 2011 Flying Pig Marathon on May 6.A resident at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Delgado was the women's winner of the 2005 Pig, her first marathon and had run two more marathons, including the 2009 Flying Pig.
"It's great," she said of the honor. "The Pig is a great event for the city. Everybody gets involved."
Delgado sustained serious facial, dental and brain injuries when a driver turned in front of her Oct. 16 in Anderson Township.
Her husband, Tim Delgado, an emergency medicine resident in Air Care doctor at University Hospital, had been dispatched to treat the "Jane Doe" patient, only to discover while beginning care that she was his wife.
Her recovery is described by doctors at University Hospital as a miracle.
She is now running again and plans to enter the 5-kilomer race April 30.
I'd like to run it," she said.
Delgado, 28, ran 3.5 miles Monday - her first run in almost six months.
"My head felt fine, but my muscles are a little sore," she said. "Five and a half months is the longest I can ever remember not running."
She ran on state championship cross country teams at Colerain High School before graduating in 2001.
Delgado underwent three surgeries on her brain, two required by injuries. A third, on March 1, treated an aneurysm on the right side of the brain that was not the result of her injuries. Doctors discovered the problem from angiograms - mappings of blood vessels in the brain - taken to treat her crash injuries. She and her husband live in Hyde Park and are avid bicyclists. Tim Delgado has helped his wife through much of her physical therapy.
She plans to return to work April 6 at Children's in the primary care clinic. She will work two to four days a week in the beginning.
