U2 or not U2?That is the question on the lips of thousands of rock fans as the Irish mega stars home-coming concerts were once again plunged in to farcical uncertainty after a Dublin court upheld residents protests and refused planning permission for the shows there had been scheduled to take place at the Lansdowne Road stadium on August 30 and 31.

A U2 spokesperson in London expressed disappointment at the turn of events. Reinforcing the band's determination to play at home, she said that the promoters would be working to overturn the decision.

Yesterday, there was little comfort for the fans. Ticket agents in Our Price Records said they "didn't know" what was going on, and could not advise whether or not refunds would be offered, or if the shows would be cancelled.

Belfast based Wonderland Concerts, co-promoters of the events, declined to shed any light on the matter refusing to issue any statement and abruptly ended a phone call when the News Letter tried to obtain clarification.

The Irish leg of U2's current Popmart tour was previously cancelled after local promoter Jim Aiken decided it was uneconomical to attempt to meet the band's demands to stage the spectacular concert production at Dublin's Phoenix Park.
