Is Aspirin a Wonder Drug?

Aspirin Might Be Soon Used As an Alternative to Many Treatments for Cancer

A new research has proposed that the patients suffering from bowel cancer, if consume aspirin every day, then their chances of dying from the disease declines by one-third.

A study conducted acknowledged 4,500 bowel cancer patients, who were the residents of The Netherlands. It was observed that almost a quarter of the patients were consuming aspirin every day, but the doses were kept low to approximately 80mg or less a day.Another quarter of the patients were not taking aspirin. The remaining half took aspirin both before and after their diagnosis.

Although, it was acknowledged that most of the patients were in taking the medicine to avoid heart related problems, including stroke or heart attack.

It was further termed that the patients who were already taking a daily dose of aspirin and continued it for almost nine months, were able to reduce their chances of dying from bowel cancer by 30%.

Other findings suggested that if the medicine was taken only after the detection of the disease, then it was able to produce a more pronounced effect than that administered, when the medicine was taken before and after the diagnosis of the disease. It has been estimated that it reduced death risk by 12%.

The reason recommended behind the above mentioned findings was that those people who were already suffering from bowel cancer and also consuming the medicine had a particularly aggressive form of tumor that did not respond as well to aspirin.

Nevertheless, it has been discovered that the taken for any time duration after the diagnosis of the disease has the capability of reducing the chances of death by 23%.

Lead researcher Dr.Gerrit-Jan Liefers, of the Leiden University Medical Centre, said: "Our work adds to growing evidence that aspirin not only can prevent cancer from occurring but if it is there it can help prevent it spreading".
